I started week one of my time in Nizhniy Novgorod by teaching a class for the entire student body of the local Orthodox Seminary. As it is often the case, most of the seminarians took it first as just one more of their Apologetics courses. They occupied the back of the large auditorium, and it took some time for them to realize what they were about to see and to hear: a completely new way of presenting the Gospel from strictly rational and historic perspective. A group of lay church leaders and catechism teachers were also invited to the event. They took the front rows and immediately engaged in the ad hoc Q&A sessions which were conveniently provided by the computer freezing after a dozen slides. (The hosts had insisted on using their system for the presentation.)

The Jewish Synagogue and the Gospel

Beginning with Abraham, God chose the Jewish people to be a separated and divinely prepared people – His witnesses and blessing to the nations (see Genesis 12ff.). Furthermore, God gave Old Testament Scripture which prophesied the coming of a Messiah who would atone for the sins of all people. Rather than extend the hope they had received to the whole world, the Jews viewed God’s offer of salvation in a nationalistic sense. Nonetheless, God was directing history, and whether they intended it or not, He used the Jewish synagogue both as a means to prepare them to anticipate their coming Messiah and as a place for Jesus to proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom quickly and widely.

- Oleg’s next mission trip to Russia is scheduled for May. We praise the Lord that many exciting ministry opportunities are open to him. He has also been invited by another ministry to teach in Uzbekistan this summer. We are praying that it will result in new ministry connections to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
- Don continues to teach three Bible classes each week in Arizona. He completed a six-part series on the Holy Spirit and is currently doing a seven-part series on a Friend to Friend evangelism plan for individuals and churches.
