Was Jesus Literate?

August 1, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

In the last issue of Happ-O-getics, I challenged the view held by some scholars that the illiteracy rate among people at the time of Jesus was at least 98% (they could neither read nor write). Based on the many libraries and volumes of written documents that existed even then, the statistic is quite unlikely.

I also quoted Helen Bond, a professor of Christian Origins at the University of Edinburgh who said, “If Jesus was a carpenter/mason, as we generally suppose, then it’s not impossible that he had some rudimentary grasp of letters and/or numbers for the purposes of his trade, but I think it very unlikely that Jesus could read or write.”

In this issue, I want to challenge the naivety or nonsense of this statement regarding Jesus.

When “Christians” Get It Wrong:  How You Can Know (Part 3)

June 1, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

At His trial, Jesus told Pontius Pilate that He had “come into the world to bear witness to the truth.” Pilate cynically replied, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38). That is precisely the question in this third and final discussion on Christian doctrinal variation: What is the authority for Christian faith and practice?

In the previous two parts, I featured the Gospel of salvation (grace alone  [sola gratia] through faith alone [sola fide]) and the nature of Jesus (the man Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God [solus Christus]).

Here I want to examine how various “Christian” groups measure up to the Protestant Reformers’ position that final authority is exclusive to Scripture (sola scriptura). A corollary to that is whether some “Christian” groups might have a “different spirit” (2 Corinthians 11:4).

When “Christians” Get It Wrong: How You Can Know (Part 2)

March 20, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

The apostle Paul identified how you can know whether someone claiming to be a Christian has gone wrong (2 Corinthians 11:4). If they have a:

  • Different Gospel (way to be saved);
  • Different Jesus;
  • Different spirit; or
  • Different authority.

In part 1 of this 3-part series, I identified the biblical Gospel (grace alone by faith alone) and discussed the deviations from this in several groups who claim to be Christian. The major departure is the unbiblical addition of human “works” to be saved.

In part 2, I want to address a “different Jesus.” This test points the way to distinguish between genuine Christian groups and those often identified as “cults.”

When “Christians” Get It Wrong:  How You Can Know (Part 1)

February 9, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

Christianity is the largest religion in the world. There are groups claiming to be of the Christian faith, yet whose teaching differs from the mainstream. Some view the differences and say, “Do not judge.” Others wonder if the deviation is important enough to dispute or even break unity. How can we know?

The Best Evidence for a Global Flood, part 2

August 2, 2023 By Dr. Don Bierle

In the last issue of the Happ-O-getics I began this as a four-part series. The first evidence (the central truth) is that the inspired Word of God teaches it. The second is: A global flood is supported by the evidence in the fossils.

In my doctoral work in biology, the fossil record was the showcase of science. Today, fossil evidence has been preempted by creationists and proponents of a global flood. Why?

What People Are Saying…

FaithSearch Discovery

The "Discovery" presentation [gives] information which totally confronts a skeptics view of what the Bible is and why they disbelieve it. This information is rarely presented in the church today and should be understood by every believer so that they may give an answer to the hope that lies within them.

-TK Pastor Onawa, IA February 22, 2017
