What’s In A Name? (Part 2)

March 21, 2023 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

Christianity is unique among
all religions of the world.

In the January issue of the Paraclete I wrote about the name “Emmanuel” given to Christ by way of announcement by the angel Gabriel (Matthew 1:23). Its meaning, “God with us,” solved the world’s age-old question of WHO God is. God revealed His identity in history – the incarnation of the Christ 2,000 years ago. We celebrate that at Christmas.

But the world’s religions still struggled with the nature of God, particularly His holiness. God revealed in the Bible that “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” (Exodus 33:20). In contrast, all humans have sinned and consequently earned death (Romans 3:23; 6:23). Most religions agree that sinful humans are separated from whatever god they serve by an insurmountable gulf. How do they propose that we bridge that gulf?

Have Black Bear / German Shepherd – Will Travel

A female black bear was misbehaving at Great Smoky Mountains National Park (invading camp sites to steal food). Dubbed “Bear 609,” she was trapped and relocated to the South Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, about 70 miles away.

Bear 609 wandered 1,000 miles through four states, over the course of six months, averaging some 5.5 miles per day.

The bear was tagged so she could be tracked. Four states and 1,000 miles later, within six months, the bear had returned to the very same campsite where she had been captured. She continued her journey, too, before finally returning again to the area from which she was originally removed. Obviously, she was smarter than the average bear!

An Analogy from Nature: The Dragonfly Gospel

As a biologist and a Christian, Dr. Don Bierle found an analogy about dragonflies particularly meaningful in an article by Lynn Vincent, executive editor for World Magazine.

(Public domain.)

Dragonflies begin their life as “nymphs” (bug-like and wingless) underwater, usually for one or two years. One day, an unknown stimulus prompts them to climb out of the water and begin to breathe. What follows is truly a molecular marvel, as she described:

2023 February-March: St. Petersburg, Bryansk, Moscow, Kolomna, Rostov Velikiy, Nizhniy Novgorod

February 24, 2023 By Dr. Oleg Voskresensky, Teacher

I am back in Moscow after leaving it four times already: for Bryansk, for Rostov Velikiy, for Kolomna and for Nizhniy Novgorod.

It is hard to imagine that a country stretching for eleven time zones east to west, and from the subtropics in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north, only has one hub city, but such is the case. I have already traveled in all directions from six of its eight railroad city terminals.

Behold the Man

February 15, 2023 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and arrayed Him in a purple robe…Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!” (John 19:1,2,5 [Emphasis added]).

“Ecce Homo” (Behold the Man) an altarpiece depicting the trial of Jesus at the hands of Pontius Pilate, by German artist Franz Ignaz Oefele, ca. 1763. (Public domain.)

Christmas is in the rearview mirror and the headlights barely reveal the coming Easter celebration. But archaeology is already helping to illuminate some interesting details about the trial and crucifixion of Jesus.

In 35 BC, Herod the Great built the Antonia Fortress to protect Jerusalem’s vulnerability to attack from the north. This palace or citadel was placed at the northwest corner of the Temple mount. Its towers stood 115 feet high with underground passageways that gave access to the city and the mount. Its footprint was more than the size of a football field, plus additional surrounding area. It served as headquarters for the Roman army in Jerusalem. At times, Roman Governors would stay there during visits.

What People Are Saying…

FaithSearch Discovery

As a professor of Philosophy, and as one who is reasonably familiar with your arguments, allow me to say that yours was the best presentation for the layman, of the evidence for faith that I have ever heard.  Praise the Lord!
