Thanksgiving: Stimulating Good Thoughts and Actions

November 13, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

A heart giving thanks at any given moment is the real test of the extent to which we love God. Love must carry with it a ‘thank you’ to God. –Francis Schaeffer

How is your contentment this Thanksgiving?

A Hebrew word for praise is “halal” from which we get the “Hallel Psalms” (113-118). It is instructive to note that “thanks” occurs there as frequently, or even more than the word “praise,” especially in Psalm 118. Furthermore, our praise word “hallelujah” combines “halal” and “Yah” [the shortened form of God’s name Yahweh) meaning “Let us praise YAH.” This is retained by the KJV and Jerusalem translations of Psalm 68:4: “Sing to God, sing praises to His name…by His name YAH, and rejoice before Him.” Most other translations miss this hallelujah connection by substituting “Lord” for YAH.

The sacrifice we are to offer God this Thanksgiving is not an ox or a bull (or a “turkey”!) on a temple altar, but “the fruit of our lips” (Hosea 14:2; “our lips as bulls” in the Masoretic Text, the authoritative text of the Hebrew Bible). The Psalmist says, “…magnify Him with thanksgiving, and it will please the Lord better than an ox” (Psalm 78:30-31).

Son of Man

October 3, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

The Banias Waterfall near Caesarea Philippi is fed by a spring at the base of Mt. Hermon, which is the principle source of the Jordan River (public domain).

Two and one-half years into His public ministry, Jesus took His apostles on a northern retreat to Caesarea Philippi, at the base of the nearly-10,000-foot-high Mount Hermon (Matthew 16:13ff.). Surprisingly, that late in His ministry the question was still, “Who is this Son of Man” (John 12:34). Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” The disciples’ answer revealed that people were still confused about Jesus’ identity (Matthew 16:14).

To avoid the popular, Jewish, firm commitment to a political and nationalistic Messianic hope, Jesus avoided wide-spread use of the title of “Messiah” (or Christ) and “Son of David.” These titles would tend to stoke insurrection against Rome by the masses, as illustrated by their response at the feeding of the 5,000: “This is of a truth the Prophet who is to come into the world… they were intending to come and take Him by force, to make Him king…” (John 6:14-15).

The Image of the Invisible God

August 20, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

The creation of light, as depicted in this woodcut, ca. 1866, by Gustave Doré (public domain).

The apostle Paul told the Colossian Christians that Jesus “is the image of the invisible God” (1:15). Later in the same letter he expanded the meaning of that: “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form” (2:9).

The apostle John identified a significant problem about God: no one has ever seen Him! But John also provided the solution to the problem: Jesus – the “One and Only” (NIV), the “begotten God” (NASB), the “divine and only Son” (Phillips) – “has made Him known” (John 1:18).

As a result, whatever attributes you attribute to the Father, you must also find in the Son – different in person but the same in essence. He is “the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). What evidence supports that?

Understanding the Essence of “Wokeism”

August 20, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, President

Recently I have noticed several current views within our culture which stand opposed to God and His revelation to us. For example, alleging there are many genders is a rejection of God’s creation of humanity in His image as “male and female,” as revealed in Genesis 1:27. An ideological refusal to bear children by some rejects God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply” (v. 28). God’s institution of marriage and family as being between a man and a woman (2:24); the sanctity of life as opposed to abortion as a right and on demand (Psalm 139:13-16); and the rejection of any “authority-figure” except self – all appear to me to be a rebellion against God, His character, and what He has revealed.

Was Jesus Literate?

August 1, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

In the last issue of Happ-O-getics, I challenged the view held by some scholars that the illiteracy rate among people at the time of Jesus was at least 98% (they could neither read nor write). Based on the many libraries and volumes of written documents that existed even then, the statistic is quite unlikely.

I also quoted Helen Bond, a professor of Christian Origins at the University of Edinburgh who said, “If Jesus was a carpenter/mason, as we generally suppose, then it’s not impossible that he had some rudimentary grasp of letters and/or numbers for the purposes of his trade, but I think it very unlikely that Jesus could read or write.”

In this issue, I want to challenge the naivety or nonsense of this statement regarding Jesus.

I have invited Dr. Don Bierle to preach and hold conferences in the two churches I have pastored in the past twenty years more often than any other speaker because of his appeal to both the head and the heart.  His premise that faith in Jesus Christ—is a more reasonable response by a rational person ...
