When “Christians” Get It Wrong:  How You Can Know (Part 3)

June 1, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

At His trial, Jesus told Pontius Pilate that He had “come into the world to bear witness to the truth.” Pilate cynically replied, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38). That is precisely the question in this third and final discussion on Christian doctrinal variation: What is the authority for Christian faith and practice?

In the previous two parts, I featured the Gospel of salvation (grace alone  [sola gratia] through faith alone [sola fide]) and the nature of Jesus (the man Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God [solus Christus]).

Here I want to examine how various “Christian” groups measure up to the Protestant Reformers’ position that final authority is exclusive to Scripture (sola scriptura). A corollary to that is whether some “Christian” groups might have a “different spirit” (2 Corinthians 11:4).

Ancient Libraries: Who Were They For?

May 24, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

Helen Bond, a professor of Christian Origins at the University of Edinburgh told The Daily Beast, “If Jesus was a carpenter/mason, as we generally suppose, then it’s not impossible that he had some rudimentary grasp of letters and/or numbers for the purposes of his trade, but I think it very unlikely that Jesus could read or write.”

Author Reza Aslan similarly told The Wall Street Journal, “…I would say the vast majority of biblical scholars would agree that the illiteracy rates in Jesus’s world were somewhere around 98 percent. 98 percent of Jesus’s fellow Jews could neither read nor write.”

Is this true…or naivety…or arrogance…or nonsense?

When “Christians” Get It Wrong: How You Can Know (Part 2)

March 20, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

The apostle Paul identified how you can know whether someone claiming to be a Christian has gone wrong (2 Corinthians 11:4). If they have a:

  • Different Gospel (way to be saved);
  • Different Jesus;
  • Different spirit; or
  • Different authority.

In part 1 of this 3-part series, I identified the biblical Gospel (grace alone by faith alone) and discussed the deviations from this in several groups who claim to be Christian. The major departure is the unbiblical addition of human “works” to be saved.

In part 2, I want to address a “different Jesus.” This test points the way to distinguish between genuine Christian groups and those often identified as “cults.”

Understanding God’s Word

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy,

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth.

The Maccabees

February 22, 2024 By Dr. Don Bierle

By Dr. Don Bierle, FaithSearch President

Upon reading the heading above, some might wonder if that might be the name of a rock band, the latest religion, or even a new fast food sandwich! Some may be aware the Maccabees were a Jewish priestly family who, by the hand of God, helped to prepare the way for the incarnation of Jesus, the Son of God, to planet earth.

What People Are Saying…

FaithSearch Origins

Sunday eve I "forced" our ninth-grade son to come, and he did—kicking and screaming.  He asked to come back Monday night because he found it so interesting.  Our eighteen-year-old son also came and was fascinated.  Thank you so much for your message.  I wish we could have had more time.
