And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind, and God saw that it was good (Genesis 1:21).
Is the account in the Bible of God creating animal giants historical fact? When reading this, many people would say, “Of course–look at the elephant and the hippo.” Those were just starters for God! How do we know? The bones don’t lie and neither does the eye!
- Quetzalcoatlus (extinct) – archaeologists have discovered the bones of this flying reptile (pterosaur) with a wingspan of fifty feet (equivalent to some modern jet fighter planes), making an automobile seem small in comparison.
- Liopleurodon (extinct) – an aquatic carnivore eighty-two feet long with a mouth more than three feet long and teeth twice as long as those of Tyrannus rex.
- Colossal Squid (extant; just observed) – the heaviest known invertebrate on earth at 1,100 pounds and twenty-three feet long (adults). Their eyes are twelve inches in diameter. The Schmidt Ocean Institute piloted a remote research vessel to a depth of 2,000 feet, and for the first time, live, there it was on camera.

To those who wonder why we have never seen this giant creature living before, it could be noted that oceans cover 70% of the planet and scientists estimate we have only catalogued about 10% of marine species. God’s creation is truly “big,” with much yet to discover which should illicit the same response as the Psalmist (118:23): “This is the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.”
