November-December 2014: Northern Urals

December 10, 2014 By Dr. Oleg Voskresensky, Teacher

Seven cities and towns in six days: Yekaterinburg, Kachkanar, Serov, Krasnoturyinsk, Severourals, Karpinsk, Nizhniy Tagil, back to Yekaterinburg and off to Moscow! Not much sleep or sightseeing but lots of events, meeting new people, sharing my own faith story and hearing theirs.

Each city was priding itself about something special. One has open gold mines where this precious metal is being simply collected from the three feet depth! Another one puts the legendary T-34 tank on the pedestal – the very last one manufactured here during the WWII. Another yet, exhibits the first steam-engine in Russia, etc., etc. Every other one claims to have Aleksandr Popov – the inventor of radio (beat Marconi  by one year!) – to have been born there. And each one has “the deepest man-made hole in the world” – a open mine pit that makes your knees shake when you stand on its edge. Apparently, most of the Periodic Table of the Elements is being dug out of the ground there and some of it you can see, smell, and taste for yourself. The color of snow in the cities varies depending on what the main plant or mine produces there: in some it is green for coper, in some it is grey for aluminum, in some – pink or orange for who knows what… People’s faces are literally shining with gold – little sparkles suddenly twinkle on a child’s check or an old lady’s eye lashes. No matter if you order tea or coffee, a distinctly metal flavor would be added to it at no charge.

For this last eight days I was sleeping on a different pillow each night staying in people’s homes and apartments. Each morning began by saying goodbye to a host family with whom I had spent the long night before sharing my life and faith story. Most of the day was spent in the car driving me to another city driven by a local pastor or a lay minister, again, hearing their faith stories and trying to encourage them in their life and ministry. The roads were not as bad as I feared – praise God, they didn’t have any major snowfalls for the last couple of weeks. We would arrive and go straight to the church in another city or town, just in time for me to set up my laptop and projector before the event. Usually they would give me an hour-and-a-half for the presentation, and then stay for full three hours with the Q&A and teatime after I finished. The host family would usually not participate, and would patiently wait for me by the door, knowing that I would be all theirs for the late-night talk. In many places, there was no Internet connection and no valid excuse for me not to stay up with them until 2 am.

“I have been a minister in this church for twenty years and I’ve never seen or heard the evidence for Christ presented so clearly and so logically”– shared one pastor to another as they passing me – “Make sure you have your church packed tonight.”

I will most probably be back in the Northern Urals some time later this year, as the word gets out to other cities and to secular audiences in the region – colleges, teachers’ conferences, public schools, etc. Hope, it happens in a little warmer time…

Back in Moscow, I am presenting here every day for this last leg of my travel. Thank you for all your prayers.

Calendars are here!

December 4, 2014 By Rick Wattman

2015 Calendars are HERE!
The first-ever, 2015 FaithSearch Calendars are HERE!

We’re trying a new project this year. We created a 2015 FaithSearch Calendar. I’m sending them out to members of my support team this week.

If you would also like to receive one, let me know. You can get one automatically by making a year-end donation to my individual support team.

I hope it will be a reminder for you to pray for our worldwide evangelism ministry. If you read its pages carefully, you’ll find special pricing on ministry resources in our Web store, monthly prayer requests, answers to frequently asked questions about the Christian faith, and loads of information about our ministry.

Thanks for your interest in my ministry here at FaithSearch. I appreciate you!

November-December 2014: Moscow, Bryansk, the Urals

December 3, 2014 By Dr. Oleg Voskresensky, Teacher

It is -20F outside of my room and it was even colder last night as my red-eye flight from Moscow-Yekaterinburg made a soft landing here. It didn’t even wake me up and it was the flight attendant who shook me by the shoulder: “What are you doing here?” The crew was about to leave when they found me still sleeping in my seat. One of the most important skills they teach you in the Missions 101 class in the seminary is – to take advantage of every minute to sleep and to be able to do it in any position – sitting, standing, hanging, walking…

My last several nights were also rather short as I traveled outside of Moscow on an early commuter train and returning to my quarters late at night. I taught my FaithSearch Discovery classes that usually range between three and four hours pretty much every day, sometimes augmenting them by the Introduction to the Christian Culture course that roughly half of Public school teachers in Russia are now teaching using my textbook. I have also taught it in two theological schools (one Orthodox and one Adventist) training future church leaders – clergy and laity – to employ our material in their teaching, preaching and evangelism work.

Back to my very first couple of days in Russia, when I rushed from Sheremetyevo airport straight to the Christ the Savior Cathedral basement Great Hall to catch the official opening of the 5th All-Russia Conference of Diocese Missionaries. I was afraid they would have not let me in if I arrived after Patriarch Kirill entered the auditorium. I made it into the building three minutes before His Eminence. God’s perfect timing – He delayed the Patriarch’s cortege so that Oleg’s tram can deliver His humble servant to this event on time. Just kidding.

Luckily, the next two days of the conference were not so …official, but it definitely was off schedule. Almost every speaker took their sweet time on the podium and spoke for up to 40 minutes (instead of 10 min maximum) completely ignoring the bell and other signs made to him or her from the presiding panel. As a result, my presentation was pushed, pushed, and pushed again… until the conference was over! Oh, Russians! When will you start doing things on time! Well, praise the Lord, my preparation was not in vain as the Russian Orthodox Missionary Review magazine will publish my presentation paper in the December issue.

My host here, in Yekaterinburg, is about to arrive and to take me to my first presentation of the week-long Urals region trip which will also include: Krasnouralsk, Serov, Karpinsk, Severouralsk, and Nizhniy Tagil. Please pray for me as I travel long miles on icy Russian highways to reach people in these cities with the Truth of Christ.

PS. Special thanks to an American missionary couple in Bryansk for a day of ministry and a true Thanksgiving night!

November-December 2014: Moscow, Bryansk, the Urals

November 22, 2014 By Dr. Oleg Voskresensky, Teacher

Writing in JFK airport while enjoying the view a truly magnificent A-380 taking off with a newly built World Trade Center and the amazing Manhattan skyline on the background. Two-and-a-half hours of flight is behind me and nine and a half more to to before I land in Sheremetyevo airport. I am mentally preparing myself for sleeping through the whole flight as I will not have any time in Moscow to adjust my inner clock. The Fifth Annual All-Russia Orthodox Conference on Missions opens four hours after I land and they will probably stop letting people in after the Patriarch begins his opening speech. Hopefully, they will not make me speak on day one and it will mostly be the time of networking, formal speeches, and informal connections. And, hopefully, I will still be awake by 11:30 pm to present a Part II of the audio version of FaithSearch Discovery on the Russian Christian Radio channel in Portland, OR, over Skype.

It will be the longest day of my trip, however. On most of my other days, I will only have one event per day. Every day, including those when I fly or travel by train to other cities – Bryansk, Yekaterinburg, Asbest, and others. Actually, this time my geography will be rather simple: two weeks in and around Moscow and one week in the Urals. My audiences, on the other hand, will range widely and will include public school teachers and university students; church folks and clergy; Orthodox and Evangelical. I will also have a chance to address “open audiences” at city events and public forums, in person and over the radio.

I am looking forward to sharing my faith and the presenting the Gospel with Evidence to all these people and ask you to pray for openness of their hearts and minds to the truth of Christ. I am commissioned and sent by you and totally depend on your support and prayers.
