I have found the Upper Room discourse (John 13-17) to be one of the most informative and life-changing passages in the New Testament. It reveals the heart of Jesus in a very personal way. That night, before His arrest in the Garden and before His crucifixion the next day, the apostle John tells us Jesus wanted to show His apostles (and eventually us) the “full extent of His love” (John 13:1, NIV).

Police in Sioux Falls, SD (Dr. Bierle’s hometown) arrested a DoorDash® driver with outstanding warrants in late January. After the arrest, officers made certain that the Arby’s® order he had been delivering got to the customer, even apologizing to them for the delay.

The apostle Peter claimed that “…we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty” (2 Peter 1:16). In fact, ten post-resurrection appearances at different times and places are recorded in the Gospels.
The apostle Paul wrote that after Jesus’ resurrection He made numerous appearances to many individuals but also to “more than 500 hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now…” (1 Corinthians 15:4-8). C.H. Dodd comments on this: “There can hardly be any purpose in mentioning the fact that most of the five hundred are still alive, unless Paul is saying, in effect, ‘the witnesses are still there [alive] to be questioned.’”

If you ask most Christians about Caesarea in Judea, you are likely to get a shrug of the shoulders or a puzzled facial expression. If they know about it at all, compared to Nazareth, Bethlehem, or Jerusalem, it doesn’t really count.
