How “Christian” Are We?
According to a Pew Research Center poll in 2017, there are as many adults in the U.S. who hold to at least one New Age belief as there are who believe in God (62%)! For the survey, people were asked their view of four New Age concepts:
- believe spiritual energy can be located in physical things
- believe in psychics
- believe in reincarnation
- believe in astrology
An astounding 33% of adults believe in reincarnation, and 41% in psychics. “Christians” (every kind) were not far behind at 29% and 40%, respectively. Even “evangelicals” were 19% and 33%, respectively.
It is disappointing that self-identifying “Christians” did not differ from those who claimed no religious affiliation (atheists, agnostics, etc.), both at 62%, who hold to at least one of the four concepts above.
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus stated God’s intention for His followers:
You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16
The apostle Paul made clear what should result if Christians truly understood God’s Word:
…we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried along by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ.
Ephesians 4:14-15
